Wolfratshausen

Wolfratshausen.JPG

Between Wolfratshausen and Geretsried, a subcamp called Fohrenwald was established in 1939. The camp was originally built by I G Farben as accommodation for its employees at various munitions factories. However, it was subsequently converted into a subcamp of Dachau. The camp was liberated by the US Army in May 1945 and turned into a refugee camp. At first, the camp continued to accommodate the Jewish, Yugoslavian, Hungarian and Baltic prisoners, but in October 1945, General Eisenhower ordered that the camp be made available exclusively for Jewish prisoners as he believed that the facilities at the Feldafing displaced persons (DP) camp were unacceptable.
