This camp was located near the present Birgsauerhof hotel just to the south of Oberstdorf.

 

The hotel was a famous spa and winter haven long before the days of the Third Reich. In mid-1943 a camp was erected in the Birgsau Valley for training members of the Waffen SS in alpine combat. 12 inmates of Dachau were sent there to help build it. This new camp was enlarged to accommodate around 30 men.

 

In 1936-7 three customs houses had been built in Birgsau. The basements of these were used to house the inmates. The officers lived in the upper floors. The whole was surrounded by a wire fence.
