Forgotten Horrors
The Nazi sub-camp system
Bad-Ischl, Austria
Bad-Ischl, Austria (Ebensee)
Bad Ischl is a spa town in Austria. The concentration camp was apparently located in a prison and there is at least one reference which locates it in the Roith district on the road to Ebensee. Unfortunately, this confuses the issue, because there are two settlements named Roith, one of which is on the eastern side of Bad Ischl, the other being on the western side of Ebensee. There was definitely a displaced persons camp in Bad Ischl, but the location of the Ebensee concentration camp just south of Ebensee's Roith district means that although this sub-camp was sometimes called Bad Ischl, it is in fact Ebensee that was meant. Given that this sub-camp was part of the Mathausen sub-camp system, not that of Dachau, it is only given a passing reference in this menu. Please go to the Mathausen section for further information.
