Schloss Itter

Schloss Itter.JPG

Schloss Itter (Itter Castle) is a castle in the Austrian village of Itter, in the Tyrol. During the war it was used as a prison for French VIPs. Towards the end of the war, it was the scene of an extraordinary incident in which American soldiers joined with soldiers of the Wehrmacht, Austrian resistance fighters and some of the prisoners in battle against the Waffen SS.

Following the 1938 Anschluss, the Nazis leased the castle (from late 1940) from its owner, Franz Grüner. However, on 7th February 1943 Heinrich Himmler ordered SS Lieutenant General Oswald Pohl to seize the castle and by 25th April it had been converted into a prison for prominent French prisoners, classified as a sub-camp administered by Dachau. The prisoners included former Prime Ministers Édouard Daladier and Paul Reynaud, former commander-in-chief Maxime Weygand and tennis champion Jean Borotra, among several other notables. A number of Eastern European prisoners from Dachau were used for maintenance and menial labour.
